Floc Size Measurement Using FBMR Probe (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement)

Case Study

Solid Solutions in cooperation with Ricardo Jeldres, PhD in chemical engineering and academic from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Antofagasta, developed a study on the Impact of Floc Size and its correlation with different types of flocculants for Centinela Mining.

The study was performed using the FBMR probe. This technique has been validated by CSIRO Mineral Resources, through the AMIRA P266 project (Improving Thickener Technology)..

The study allowed recording the chord length of the particle aggregates, according to the type of flocculant selected. The preselection was made in conjunction with the user and with the flocculant supplier. This study was also correlated with the Yield stress of the compacted product.

The study allowed us to conclude that by using FBMR technology it is possible to obtain a new correlation of use of flocculants and type of flocculant, which allow optimizing the performance of the thickener through a new formulation.
